   Civics & Law Academies

The Civics & Law Academies will be held at Dundalk, Owings Mills, Essex and Catonsville CCBC Campuses, and will have students from five area high schools at each event. More than 100 students, with teacher chaperones, will attend two of five classes offered throughout the day. They will all receive a flash drive with materials from all classes included.

Each class will be led by a faculty team including one judge and at least one attorney. All materials, including PowerPoint presentations, are provided to the faculty by the Committee. The day concludes with a round-table lunch, providing the students a valuable opportunity to interact with the attorneys and judges.

If you are interested in being a faculty member, please contact Committee Chair Tiffany Franc for further information, or download this flyer NOW!

Wills for Heroes

Invitation to Attorneys and Notaries

The Maryland State Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section, as an affiliate of the Wills for Heroes Foundation, is proud to sponsor the Wills for Heroes program.  We are looking for volunteer attorneys and notaries to participate in a Wills for Heroes event to benefit the Maryland National-Capital Park Police on Saturday, September 6, 2014, at the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services Public Safety Training Facility, 5370 Public Safety Place, Frederick, MD 21704. Volunteers will receive training from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and then will see clients for one (1) hour appointments starting at 11:00 am and ending at 5:00 pm.

The Wills for Heroes Foundation is a national non-profit organization that provides free wills, advance directives and powers of attorney to first responders, including police officers, firefighters, paramedics, corrections and probation officers.  The foundation was started in response to the tragic events of 9/11, and is administered nationwide by local affiliate programs.  At day-long Wills for Heroes events, volunteer attorneys meet with first responders and use HotDocs software donated by LexisNexis to draft the documents, which are then signed, witnessed and notarized at the event.  More information on the Wills for Heroes Foundation is available at: www.willsforheroes.org.

You must have your own malpractice insurance to participate; coverage will not be provided for you.  No experience in trusts and estates law is required to participate, although we welcome experienced practitioners.  To volunteer, or to learn more about the program, contact Maryland Wills for Heroes coordinator Sarah Cline at: scline@shulmanrogers.com or (301) 945-9245.
