STRENGTHENING OUR SERVICE TO LAWYERS
In October, John Nowicki, Heather Martin and I represented the BCBA at the Maryland State Bar Association’s Bar Presidents Conference in Easton. The Baltimore County members of the MSBA Board of Governors also attended. The retreat was a great opportunity to explore ways in which local and specialty bar associations can be more responsive to member needs. At the same time, we obtained independent feedback about some of our own Association’s programs and services. Ultimately, you are the judges who decide whether the services we deliver benefit your professional life and practice.
The Executive Council, Committee Chairs and Vice Chairs and our excellent bar staff pay a great deal of attention to ensuring that our members get the highest return for each dues dollar. At our November 12 meeting, the Council evaluated recent recommendations of the BCBA’s certified public accountant, Margaret M. Layman, C.P.A., who urged that we increase dues in order to maintain a sound and balanced operating budget that will enable us to effectively promote our Association’s mission. The Council also considered the fact that there has been no increase in seven (7) years even though many operating expenses have risen during that period. When compared to other major county bar associations in this state, BCBA dues are and will remain the least expensive. With all that in mind, the Council voted to increase membership dues by $15.00 effective with the December billing.
Also in December you will receive your invitation to attend the Eighty-first Annual Bar Banquet at Martin’s West. The Council has voted not to increase ticket prices for this year’s event. In years past, each President has had the prerogative of hosting a VIP party before the Banquet. Some of my predecessors chose to host such a gathering and some did not. For my own part, I love to party and have decided to combine the VIP hour with our regular cocktail hour so that all members and their guests can attend. Because of the potential problems posed by hazardous winter weather, cocktails will be served beginning at 6:30 pm on Monday, January 27, instead of last year’s 7:00 pm start time.
In the meantime, I hope to see you at our Holiday Party on December 9 at the Towson Armory. On behalf of the entire Executive Council, I would like to extend our warmest best wishes to you and yours for a peaceful and safe Holiday Season.
